Το Κέντρον Ερεύνης της Ελληνικής και Λατινικής Γραμματείας της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών διοργανώνει διάλεξη του καθηγητή Richard Buxton (Bristol) με τίτλο «Myths of the Greek islands: patterns of isolation and connectivity». Η διάλεξη θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Τετάρτη 6 Μαΐου στις 12.00 στην Ανατολική Αίθουσα του Μεγάρου της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών.
ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
My aim in this lecture will be to consider some general features of the myths told about the Greek islands in antiquity – both ‘real’ and ‘imaginary’ islands (though the distinction is not, of course, a simple one). Among these features are: isolation, whether viewed positively or negatively; connectivity; the sea; instability; the integration of myth and cult; beginnings and endings; myths told by islanders versus those told by others. After reviewing these features I shall ask how far they are distinctive to the islands, and how far they are more broadly panhellenic. By way of answer, I shall suggest that we can see these features as set out along a spectrum: at one end will be themes found in equal measure in insular myths and in mainland myths; at the other end, themes that are distinctive, or at least more distinctive, to the myths of the islands.
